Canadian crypto adoption struggles as cash remains king

Less than 3% of Canadians have used Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies for day-to-day payments. Over 80% indicated they have no plans to stop using cash in the future.

Amount of energy needed for Bitcoin mining has doubled in Canada this year

In Canada, about 4,048 gigawatt hours of electricity has been consumed by bitcoin mining operations since the start of 2024. This amounts to an expenditure of $424.2 million, based on the average electricity rate of $0.10 per kilowatt-hour.

Of the 125,550 Bitcoins mined globally in 2024, Canadian mining facilities are responsible for 8,135.69, or 6.48% share of global production. This makes Canada the world’s fourth-largest Bitcoin mining hub, behind the United States, China, and Kazakhstan.

Digital asset custodian Balance announced the incorporation of Balance Trust Company as a special purpose trust in Alberta, committing $10,000,000 of regulatory capital towards becoming a qualified Canadian and US custodian.

Republican National Committee Endorses Pro-Bitcoin Platform in Party Draft

A Republican National Committee panel approved a draft of its 2024 party platform, pledging to “defend the right to mine Bitcoin” and protect self-custody.

The draft states:

“We will defend the right to mine Bitcoin, and ensure every American has the right to self-custody of their digital assets, and transact free from Government Surveillance and Control.”

Cryptocurrency prices have been plunging as investors are focusing on the payout of nearly $9 billion to users of collapsed Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox. The dumping of coins onto the market is expected to lead some significant selling action.

The German government recently transferred a substantial amount of Bitcoin to centralized exchanges, prompting discussions and speculations, as transferred to exchanges typically suggest an intention to sell. The German authorities’ Bitcoin activities trace back to a massive seizure of almost 50,000 BTC from illegal film piracy website Movie2k in January.
